4 units · VIS · UC San Diego

Thematic course asks how modernity’s concept of blackness might be bound to the emergence of photographic technologies and the trajectory and futures of Black peoples. Explores blackness as a fundamental element of photographic viewing—Black subjects as constituted within systems of political power and Black and queer subjectivities as places to locate contemporary critique. Investigations of these ideas will cover historical and contemporary photo media including art documentary and vernacular imagery.
