SIO 145Introduction to Field Methods in Biological Oceanography

6 units · SIO · UC San Diego

Diverse biological communities of the open ocean drive marine biogeochemistry and food-webs. This laboratory course introduces methods that quantify biomass and consumption rates of organisms spanning plankton to fishes. Laboratory, taxonomic, and computational methods for analyzing biological samples are presented. Receive hands-on, at-sea experience for sampling multiple levels of the pelagic food web, through active participation in two single-day oceanographic cruises and other local fieldwork.
