HISA 123South Asia since 1947

4 units · HISA · UC San Diego

This course studies the history of South Asian nation-states—India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bhutan—since the end of British imperialism in the region. Beginning with the partition and independence of India and Pakistan in 1947, the course takes a comparative approach across national boundaries to explore themes such as democracy and authoritarianism; martial rule; social inequities and citizenship; religion and culture; and connectedness in global and Asian contexts.
