It treats the Indian Ocean as an interregional arena, connecting the regions now known as South Asia, Southeast Asia, West Asia, and East Africa. It analyzes changes and continuities in these connections from pre-colonial empires to European trade and colonization, and finally the emergence of nation-states. +
