COMM 181Citizen Consumers
This course considers the idea of the citizen-consumer that organizes much of contemporary urban planning and processes of identity, class, race, and gender formation in cities globally. Focusing on contemporary service oriented economies, we will critically explore how consumption spaces, such as shopping malls, theme parks, plazas, markets, parks, beaches, and tourist resorts, are critical nodes to understand neoliberal patterns of land transformation, labor exploitation, and social change.
